I was apparently not the only one who noticed the fishy trend at this year’s Oscar awards. The mermaid look has made a comeback. The iconic slinky silhouette with a fishtail flare was interpreted by top designers and worn by some of the biggest stars on the red carpet.

The tail was created for her by the special effects artists at Peter Jackson’s WETA Workshop.

It is not surprising that this story would spread like wildfire. Not only are the images of her swimming absolutely stunning but the story of how she became a mermaid makes it even more amazing. Seriously, everyone who has to have both their legs amputated should be given one of these.

Last summer we produced a short film about our first mermaid subject, The Brooklyn Babydoll. We were lucky enough to have this film premiere at Coney Island Museum as part of the 2008 Coney Island Film Festival. It was a rainy day but that didn’t stop us from showing up full of mermaid pride. The Brooklyn Babydoll, herself made sure we arrived in style in a white stretch limo all the way from Bensonhurst! The film screened along with a great selection of  New York inspired short films with subjects ranging from birds to baseball to carneys and virgins, couldn’t have asked for better company!
