Carol Memmott at USAToday calls Mermaids The Next Big Thing in this mornings edition and lists a number of new books coming out this year on the subject. Even the queen of supernatural trashy novels, herself Stephanie Meyer, is said to have caught the Mermania! None of this comes as any surprise to Mermaids of New York, we know that Mermaids have been here all along, most folks just didn’t notice before.

Take for example, the very fabulous Bambi The Mermaid, in this clip from Mermaids of New York she shows that she is a woman of many tales and tails!

Being a Mermaid is not just fun and games, many we have encountered use their mermaid powers to raise awareness about the crucial environmental issue of protecting the earth’s water and its lifeforms. Makes sense, right?!

In this clip from Mermaids of New York, Mara Haseltine, environmental activist and sculptor talks passionately about why she does what she does.

Hard not to care, when you put it that way!

Mermaid Hannah, another professional mermaid, even started a non-profit which engages surfers to help protect marine life through direct action!

Not a mermaid but still interested in going blue? check out this out!

A Meeting of Mermaids

Mermaids convene all the time, often in small groups, sometimes to conspire, but mostly to make merry!

We recently had the pleasure of spending time with writer and fellow mermaid documenter, Carolyn Turgeon. A real, Mermaid of New York, she recently published a brand new re-telling of the classic Hans Christian Anderson story The Little Mermaid, and has been traveling all over, interviewing, everyone about mermaids on her blog, I Am A Mermaid.

As the photo below demonstrates, we had a lot in common!

Weeki Wachee Mermaids Calendar

Weeki Wachee Mermaids Calendar

Bambi The Mermaid and photographer Andrew Brusso, have been getting tons of great press for the 2010 Weeki Wachee Springs Mermaid calendar which they created. Proceeds from the sale of this limited edition calendar goes to help keep the mermaids swimming in the historic Weeki Wachee Springs park. Also congratulations to Bambi, whose dog Mr. Velvet Underpants was wed to Miss Movie Star in a small public ceremony in Brooklyn this past Saturday.

Mara at Waterpod

Mara Haseltine never stops moving, traveling the world to speak at conferences, teach courses and create site specific sculptures. We visited her at Governers Island where she had an installation made of thousands of oyster shells (what else!) and gave a talk about urban oyster restoration on the Waterpod. The Guardian UK has a nice interview about her environmental work if you are interested in learning more.

I have to say that we are incredibly blessed to have so many generous and talented friends who are helping to make Mermaids of New York a truely collaborative endeavor.

Today’s incredible contribution comes from the lovely and talented illustrator A.V. Phibes, who created a kick-ass logo for our project. We think she really captures the spirit of our film and she is definitely a proud New Yorker!

One question remains… what to name her?! Suggestions?

I was apparently not the only one who noticed the fishy trend at this year’s Oscar awards. The mermaid look has made a comeback. The iconic slinky silhouette with a fishtail flare was interpreted by top designers and worn by some of the biggest stars on the red carpet.

One mermaid in particular was all over the web last month. Nadya Vessey made headlines when she debuted her state of the art mermaid swimming tale.

The tail was created for her by the special effects artists at Peter Jackson’s WETA Workshop.

It is not surprising that this story would spread like wildfire. Not only are the images of her swimming absolutely stunning but the story of how she became a mermaid makes it even more amazing. Seriously, everyone who has to have both their legs amputated should be given one of these.

I read this great profile on Nadya, which confirms that she isn’t merely swimming like a mermaid but she actually, embodies the real spirit of a mermaid. She is bold, strong-willed, resourceful and generous, with a great sense of humor and whimsy.
