Being a Mermaid is not just fun and games, many we have encountered use their mermaid powers to raise awareness about the crucial environmental issue of protecting the earth’s water and its lifeforms. Makes sense, right?!
In this clip from Mermaids of New York, Mara Haseltine, environmental activist and sculptor talks passionately about why she does what she does.
Hard not to care, when you put it that way!
Mermaid Hannah, another professional mermaid, even started a non-profit which engages surfers to help protect marine life through direct action!

Each of the Mermaids of New York has her own very unique personal style, some of them, I would even say are fashion icons. This is certainly true for Dame Darcy who always manages to look like a living doll (no coincidence that she actually makes dolls, as well). When we met up wit her last month, I was completely enchanted by this extraordinary chapeau :
One If By Sea
We had lovely dinner together, at a diner in Brooklyn, where she showed us the re-issue of her Meat Cake graphic novels, now available for purchase online and we talked about art, life and lemon meringue. Then we went to a gallery to see Eternal Christmas, where she had painted a wintry mural and performed some traditional sea shanties.

She Sings Sea Shanties
Darcy is really an inspired and passionate work of art, herself. It was great getting to know her better – can’t wait to show you what we filmed! In the meantime, for anyone who has never seen Dame Darcy’s infamous appearance on the corny 90′s dating show, Blind Date, it is some kind of wonderful.
